How should LED floodlights be used?
Which bulb should I use?
When it comes to installing outdoor security lighting, the details that each homeowner can choose from are considerable and constantly expanding. We recommend motion sensor outdoor sconces with replaceable LED floodlights that are hardwired into your home. Solar lights, while great in concept, rarely perform as well as they sell. Cloudy days, snow, rain, and various other factors can only make them appear intermittently. Also, when they start to lose charge, their output will suffer. Conversely, hardwired LEDs should last a long time, but if they need to be replaced, be sure to ask if their bulbs are replaceable. If the manufacturer doesn't have replaceable bulbs, it's good to know what their warranty is and what their claims process is like.
Also, you'll see other options like what lumen output to choose or the style of the bulb, which are relatively benign and depend on personal preference. That said, we do want to recommend something specific, which is the Kelvin scale for outdoor use. We discussed the Kelvin scale, which I will reiterate here. For outdoor and nighttime needs, you'll need to start at 4,000 Kelvin. 4,000 Kelvin is equivalent to a full moon, which is the best choice for our eyes to focus and evaluate our surroundings at night. As you can see in the image below, the Kelvin scale goes up to 10,000, but after 4,000 it just gets bluer. The reason you want to avoid lower Kelvin bulbs is simply because they don't provide enough exposure or detail, especially the further away you get from the bulbs, because they're so hot. This shouldn't be an issue for you as many manufacturers sell their products based on the same philosophy, we just want to make sure you know to avoid the lower scale ranges.

How high should I install outdoor security lighting?
When installing outdoor lights, you want to make sure they cannot be tampered with by criminals. This doesn't mean keeping them within reach, as criminals could use sticks, brooms, or other tools to damage your fixtures. We recommend that all lights be placed at 8-12' minimum height and 20' maximum height. This tends to be a hard range for criminals to tamper with the system, but it's also a safe range where your motion sensors still work. Most motion sensors on exterior lights have a 25-foot limit for them to operate, so you don't want to push that limit too aggressively. The higher the lights are mounted, the shorter the distance they can see.
